Isolating test masses from the environment

An order to minimize and keep under control the noise generated by perturbations - from minute vibrations of the Earth's surface to the thermal motion of different parts of the detector - there exist sophisticated suspensions for the crucial optical building blocks of the interferometric detectors.

A test configuration for a suspension for the detector GEO 600 can be seen in the image to the left; another one is exhibited in this exhibition, behind you to the right.
