Volumetry: Burettes with Stand
Second half of the 19th century

The burette is a calibrated glass tube with an aperture and stopcock used to deliver small controlled quantities of a reactant agent into a reaction vessel. The end of the reaction is then signaled by the changing color of an indicator. The burette is the most important instrument in volumetry invented toward the end of the eighteenth century. The volume of the added reactant agent indicates the amount of reacting substance in the reaction vessel.
