S2 in its Orbit

Star S2 reached its closest distance to Sagittarius A* in the spring of 2002. At that time it was travelling faster than 5000 km/sec, and approached the central black hole to within 17 light-hours, less than 20 billion kilometres.

If it wasn’t for its exceptional location, S2 would be quite a standard star, fifteen times larger and seven times heavier than the Sun.
