XMM Newton carries on board a sophisticated X-ray telescope called EPIC, European Photon Imaging Camera. EPIC consists of three cameras, each containing a sensitive core, a CCD or Charge-Coupled Device, which records the X-ray signals from energetic astrophysical sources.
