Adding by Means of an Ion Crystal

The ions do largely stay in the center of the ring trap, they form thus an ordered structure in essence which may be manipulated. Shown is here the addition of an ion.

As trivial as this looks like - for the computation using a quantum computer even most simple arithmetic operations have to be 'invented' and technically mastered again at the outset. Those as yet largely hypothetical machines don't compute digitally, that is in bits, but rather use much more complex quantities, the "qubits".

Should it happen that a quantum computer is realized, so it will certainly not be technically based on the ion crystal. This technique is useful for basic studies, however.
